He also received his Master of Arts in Theological Studies in 2015 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. Derek has also worked with a unique population in his graduate internship at the Baylor Scott and White Institute for Rehabilitation-Frisco, counseling a wide variety of individuals who had traumatic brain injuries.

Derek offers a diverse and wide range of counseling options. Derek specializes in working with teens, college & adults dealing with trauma, grief, anxiety disorders, depression, guilt, shame, addictions, couples, and family counseling. He is also experienced with teens and young adults experiencing life transition struggles, as well as the LGBTQ population and older adults with end of life decisions. Derek pulls from a variety of theories when working with individuals, including: Adlerian Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Attachment Theory, Art Therapy, Gottman Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, Narrative, Dreamwork as well as Solution-Based Therapy.
A native Texan, Derek was adopted and raised in Dallas and has lived in the DFW area his whole life. Being raised by adoptive parents gave Derek an intimate working knowledge of children who are raised by adoptive parents and the challenges that both the parent and child could experience.

Sarah Black

Practice Name: Peace by Piece Counseling

Email: sarahb@pbp-counseling.com

About: From a young age, Sarah has always had a heart for helping others. After graduating high school, she set out to enter the mental health field but life events led her to the corporate world, where she spent a decade developing valuable skills. Despite her success, Sarah felt a longing to make a deeper impact, which led her to transition into education. Working as a high school teacher and counselor reignited her passion for helping others, particularly adolescents, as they navigate the complexities of life.

Sarah’s approach to therapy is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but she also integrates principles from Neuropsychotherapy to offer a holistic approach to mental health. Her years of experience working with at-risk teenagers have deepened her understanding of how the brain processes experiences differently for each individual, making her well-equipped to support clients in piecing together the puzzle of their lives.
For Sarah, the ideal therapeutic relationship is a collaboration. She believes that clients often have the answers within themselves but sometimes need guidance to discover them. Her role is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel supported and comfortable to share. By closely observing verbal and non-verbal cues, Sarah ensures that each session provides the comfort and trust clients need to fully open up and grow.
Over the last 12 years, Sarah has helped teenagers, particularly those facing anxiety, depression, and other challenges, develop life skills that endure beyond therapy. She is passionate about empowering her clients to self-advocate and find their voices.
Sarah is dedicated to her own professional development and attends the Adolescent Mental Health Symposium annually. She is also pursuing additional training in CBT and Neuropsychotherapy to continue offering the best care possible to her clients.
When not in session, Sarah enjoys listening to audiobooks, traveling, and visiting beaches, which she finds calming and rejuvenating. She looks forward to helping you navigate your own journey towards self-discovery and personal growth, one piece at a time.
